Every call, text, and automated reminder in Alvéya starts with a dedicated phone number for your practice. This guide walks you through choosing and purchasing one.
Before you start: Make sure you're inside the correct location in Alvéya before purchasing — numbers are tied to a single location and can't be shared across accounts. If you'd rather keep your existing number and only need outbound calling, see our guide on connecting an existing number instead — purchasing is only needed if you want SMS or inbound calls through Alvéya.
⚠️ If you're purchasing an Australian number, complete your Address Bundle and Regulatory Bundle before starting the purchase below — you won't be able to complete checkout without them. See our guide on setting up a Regulatory Bundle.
Step 1: Open your Phone Numbers settings
Go to Settings → Phone System → Phone Numbers.
Click + Add Number in the top right, then choose Add Phone Number.
Step 2: Choose your country and number type
Select the country you'd like your number based in.
Use Filters to narrow your search — you can match specific digits or phrases at the start, end, or anywhere in the number.
Decide between a local number (looks like a regular number for that area) or a toll-free number (starts with a recognisable prefix).
💡 Toll-free numbers can send messages a little faster than local numbers, which is worth considering if you send high volumes of SMS reminders or campaigns.
⚠️ Numbers are country-specific — an Australian number can only message Australian contacts, and so on. If your practice communicates with clients in more than one country, you'll need a separate number for each.
Step 3: Select and purchase your number
Browse the available numbers. If nothing feels right, click Refresh Results to see more options.
Once you've found the one you want, click Proceed to Buy to complete the purchase.
⚠️ The first time you purchase a +1 (US/Canada) number, you may be asked to complete a quick identity check — a government-issued ID and a live selfie. This is a one-time step per account, and once it's done you won't be asked again for future purchases.
What happens next
Once purchased, your new number appears in your Phone Numbers list and is ready to make and receive calls and texts. Before you start sending campaigns or reminders, it's worth reading through our guides on calculating your SMS costs and setting up automatic opt-out and sender info — both help you avoid surprises down the track.
Frequently asked questions
Q: I can't find a number for my country. What do I do?
Not every country has local or toll-free numbers available. Reach out to support and we'll help you find the right option.
Q: Do I need a separate number for calls, SMS, and workflows?
No — one number handles calls, texts, and automations for your location.
Q: My purchase was declined. Why?
For Australian numbers, this is almost always a missing or unapproved Address Bundle or Regulatory Bundle — both need to be approved before checkout will complete. For other regions, it's usually related to identity verification. Contact support and we'll help you sort it out.
Q: Can I purchase more than one number for my business?
Yes — many practitioners do this to manage different departments, services, or locations from the same account.
Q: Can I move my number to a different provider later?
Yes. Reach out to support and we'll provide the details you'll need to hand over to your new provider to complete the transfer.
Q: Can I bring in a number from another agency or platform?
Yes, once any compliance requirements for that number's country are complete. Send support the number's current account details and we'll guide you through the transfer.
You're ready to start communicating with your clients by phone and text.
If you get stuck at any point, reach out via live chat or submit a support request and we will guide you through.
