Local SEO basics: reviews, local listings & backlinks

The ongoing, offsite work that builds real trust with both search engines and future clients.

Reviews: your strongest local trust signal

Reviews do double duty — they build trust with potential clients reading your profile, and they're a meaningful factor in how well you rank locally on Google.

  • Ask for a review shortly after a positive appointment, while the experience is fresh.

  • Share your review link directly by text or email rather than hoping people find it themselves.

  • Respond to every review, using the client's name and a specific, genuine reference to their visit.

⚠️ Keep review responses free of specific clinical details or outcome claims, in line with AHPRA guidance — a warm, general thank-you is always safe ground.

Local listings

Beyond Google, being listed accurately on other relevant directories reinforces your credibility and gives Google more consistent signals about your business.

  • Make sure your name, address and phone number match exactly wherever you're listed.

  • Focus on directories genuinely relevant to your field, rather than listing everywhere indiscriminately.

Backlinks: being referenced by other trusted sites

A backlink is simply another website linking to yours. The more relevant, trustworthy sites that link to you, the more Google trusts your site in return.

  • Build genuine relationships with related local businesses or professionals who might reasonably link to you.

  • Contribute a guest article to a relevant, reputable blog in your field, with a link back to your site.

  • Avoid low-quality link schemes or paid link farms — they can actively harm your ranking rather than help it.

💡 Backlinks build slowly and naturally. A handful of genuine, relevant links will do more for you than a large number of low-quality ones.
