Setting Up Automatic Opt-Out and Sender Info Updates for SMS Compliance

Keep ongoing SMS conversations compliant with TCPA, CTIA, GDPR and CCPA by automatically refreshing opt-out language and sender details at a set interval.

Staying compliant with SMS regulations gets harder the longer a conversation runs and the more campaigns you manage. This guide shows you how to have Alvéya automatically refresh opt-out language and sender details in your ongoing conversations, so you don't have to think about it.

What this feature does

This is a built-in compliance automation that appends required opt-out language and sender details to your SMS conversations at a regular interval you choose. It helps your messaging stay aligned with TCPA, CTIA, GDPR and CCPA requirements, reducing the risk of regulatory penalties or carrier filtering — without you needing to manually add this information to every conversation.

💡 This setting is controlled per location. New locations have it enabled by default; existing locations have it switched off until you turn it on. Either way, the first outbound message in any conversation always includes sender info and opt-out language, regardless of this setting.

Step 1: Navigate to Messaging Compliance

  1. From your dashboard, click Settings.

  2. Select Phone Numbers.

  3. Click the Messaging tab at the top.

  4. Open the Messaging Compliance sub-tab.

Step 2: Add your opt-out message

  1. Enable Make SMS compliant by adding an opt-out message.

  2. Enter your opt-out text — for example, "Reply STOP to Unsubscribe!"

  3. Click Customize to fine-tune the wording and placement.

Step 3: Add your sender information

  1. Enable Make SMS compliant by adding a sender information.

  2. Enter your business name or a short sender signature — for example, "Thanks, [Your Business Name]".

  3. Click Customize to adjust the text and where it appears.

Step 4: Turn on periodic opt-out

  1. Toggle Enable Periodic Opt-Out on.

  2. Under Include Sender ID & Opt-Out Message Every [X] Days, choose how often you'd like it refreshed — anywhere from 1 to 60 days (30 is the default).

  3. Click Save.

💡 Turn this on if you run recurring promotions or nurture sequences and want opt-out language to stay visible throughout. If you handle follow-up compliance messaging manually, you can leave it off — though we wouldn't recommend it.

Optional: regional restrictions

If it applies to your business, you can also enable the setting to block SMS/MMS to and from Texas-based recipients or area codes, to help meet state-specific messaging regulations.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does this update conversations that already happened?
No — it only applies to new and ongoing conversations going forward. Past messages are unaffected.

Q: How does the system know when to re-add the opt-out info?
It tracks each conversation thread and automatically refreshes the compliance details once your chosen interval has elapsed.

Q: Can I turn this off if I handle compliance manually?
Yes — either extend the interval or switch off Enable Periodic Opt-Out entirely, though we'd recommend keeping some form of periodic reminder in place.

Q: Does this affect deliverability?
It can help. Carriers often filter or block messages that are missing sender or opt-out details, so keeping this information current supports better delivery rates and reduces the risk of carrier penalties.

Your ongoing conversations will now stay compliant without any extra effort on your part.
If you get stuck at any point, reach out via live chat or submit a support request and we will guide you through.
